What are the Benefits
of Becoming a Citizen?

Naturalization can be described as the process through which a foreign national or immigrant becomes an American citizen. Some of the benefits of obtaining U.S. citizenship include:

  • You can vote in federal and state elections.

  • You can bring your family members to the United States.

  • You can obtain citizenship for your children born abroad.

  • You and your children cannot be deported to your former country.

  • You can apply for a U.S. passport.

  • When you travel with a U.S. passport, you can receive U.S. government assistance when overseas.

  • You can become eligible for federal jobs.

  • You can be a participant on a jury.

  • You can become an elected official.

  • You can receive federal benefits and privileges available to only U.S. citizens.

Individuals who are naturalized U.S. citizens have the same rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship.

Who is Eligible?

Before you can apply for naturalization to become a U.S. citizen, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older at the time of filing your application.

  • Be physically present or reside continuously in the United States.

  • Have been a legal permanent resident for the past three or five years

  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

  • Be of good moral behavior.

  • Have adequate knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.

  • Be loyal to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.

  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance.

Naturalization Process

The naturalization process requires that specific steps be taken for an application to be considered. An experienced immigration attorney can help you:

  • Determine whether you’re eligible to become an American citizen.

  • Complete Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization.

  • Obtain photographs of yourself that meet the requirements of immigration service.

  • Collect the necessary documents.

  • Submit the application form, necessary documents, and filing fees to the right Service Center.

  • Attend a biometrics appointment.

  • Take the U.S. Naturalization Test.

  • Prepare for a personal interview.

Candidates who are successful with the interview and test will proceed to take the Oath of Allegiance. Once you file an application for naturalization, you are expected to live in the United States continuously from the filing date to the naturalization time.

Hearing Request for Denials

If your application is denied, you may request a USCIS hearing before an officer. The hearing will be scheduled within 180 days after seeking a request. An officer will conduct a “de novo” review (new and full review) of your naturalization application.
